I generally find the whole concept of ‘freakshows’ worrying to say the least, so have reservations about that aspect of the book. And the implication that Gene/Micah is intersex because her biological parents were being punished is extremely problematic. However, I thought the the book dealt with a number of issues incredibly well, especially the exploration of gender stereotypes and attraction. I won’t write more here, as I think you’ve pretty much covered it in your review.
