The Severed Thread, by Leslie Vedder, follows up on the story of Briar, Fi, Shane, and Red as they work to take down the Spindle Witch and save Andar. The curse is broken, but it’s not over until they can uncover the secret to taking down the Spindle Witch once and for all. With a mysterious book code, witch hunters around every corner, fun new riddles, unbroken curses still hanging over their heads, and slow-burning romances firing from every page, this sequel keeps the reader hooked.
Lovers of the treasure hunting and lost ruins in the first book will not be disappointed, as this sequel holds even more hidden caverns and secret tunnels galore. Readers will also love the relationships as slow-burn romances leave them itching for a passionate confession. Briar and Fi continue in their push-and-pull affair as Fi guards her heart and Briar works to uncover what she is hiding from him. Red and Shane must learn to work together to stay alive, but will they officially go from enemies to lovers? The love dynamics in The Severed Thread were definitely enough to keep me glued.
I once again praise Leslie Vedder for her writing in this magical sequel. I can especially appreciate an author’s writing when I can find a character to relate to, and as mentioned in my review of The Bone Spindle, I relate to Fi the most through her love of books and knowledge. Fi is presented with quite a lot of obstacles in this book, and I can easily say that I would have made all of the same moves and decisions. With the Butterfly Curse still hanging over her shoulder, she begins to throw herself into the quest. This becomes quite useful at the end of the book and is merely icing on the cake for how much I love her.
The author also takes this book one step further by adding another point of view. While the first book contains Briar’s, Fi’s, and Shane’s perspectives, this one adds Red’s, making her an additional main character. Adding her perspective gives the story more depth. It also provides Shane with a more exciting storyline by building on their dynamic. I can’t wait to read the third and final book in this trilogy and see how the author will continue to impress. Overall, I give this book a top-notch rating, and I think I can safely say that I liked The Severed Thread even better than The Bone Spindle.
Harry Potter fans will love the magic-filled pages and tight-knit friendships of The Severed Thread. They will see adventure, action, romance, and lots of magic throughout the book and will once again feel the comfort of the found family trope.
